Tabakspijpen
Het onderzoek naar tabakspijpen is reeds in de 19de eeuw gestart. Westerhoff schreef hier als eerste Nederlander een verhandeling over.
Aan het begin van de 20ste eeuw ontstaat er een hausse van artikelen over de wegkwijnende Goudse pijpennijverheid.
Door toedoen van D.A. Goedewaagen krijgt het tabakspijpenonderzoek in de jaren dertig en veertig van de 20ste eeuw een nieuwe boost. Naast een boek over merken dat hij samen met Helbers schreef, publiceerde hij ook regelmatig over dit onderwerp in het blad “Die Gouwe”.
Direct na de tweede wereldoorlog werd werd het kleipijpenonderzoek met name door de Engelstalige landen aangevoerd. Het onderzoek was met name gericht om op mathematische basis een exacte datering van de tabakspijp te verkrijgen.
Een verlengstuk hiervan is het werk van F.H.W. Friederich dat in 1975 onder de naam Pijpelogie als AWN monografie werd uitgegeven.
Vanaf die tijd wordt verhoudingsgewijs veel onderzoek naar dit onderwerp gedaan en dit heeft geleid tot diverse publicaties.
De vragen die heden ten dage bij archeologisch onderzoek spelen betreffen de herkomst en de datering van de producten en de sociale status van de gebruikers die men aan de producten kan aflezen.

A new boost was given in the thirties and fourties of the 20th century bij
D.A. Goedewaagen. After

World War, the
clay pipe
research
mostly continued by English speaking countries. The research
was mainly
focused
on the
mathematical
basis to
reach a precise
dating
of the
clay tobacco pipe.
An extension
of this is
the in
1975 published work
of F.H.W.
Friederich:
Pijpelogie.
Since that
time, proportionately
more research
on this issue
was done
and this
has led to
various
publications.
